Wild Art

I heard an interesting radio documentary on The Current this evening called Wild Art. The documentary discussed the out-sider art world of Vancouver and how drug treatment programs and support for those living in poverty has helped some struggling artists turn their work into careers.

The Telegraph Journal published an article today about a chemical PULSE plans on using to scrub away the graffiti in the uptown and south end of Saint John.

Partridge Island Graffiti

I visited Partridge Island and was excited to see what sort of graffiti would be over there. It was dark in many of the buildings but there were a few neat paintings.

Skull

Here's another skull. This one is behind the building at the corner of King and Germain Streets.

This quote from Full Metal Jaclet is on a wall behind the top block of King Street.

Favourite Target

I saw this sticker posted on a sign on Bentley Street, where the Harbour Passage leads to the museum archives. This one targets Irving Oil - a favourite target of the Saint John stickerers.

I thought the placement on the natural pipeline sign was a little ironic, as natural gas is supposed to be a cleaner alternative to oil.

Growth

Here's another sticker I saw while going about town. This one seems to be implying that the economics growth in Saint John is toxic. This could be a reaction to the massive move toward the Energy Hub and its endorsement by many groups and government officials.

The placement of the sticker is likely wise at reaching the converted and or most easy to convert. The sticker is on a look out at Harbour Passage (as illustrated on the top), a spot for outdoorsy types and those trying to use motorized travel less to walk along the harbour.

Greed

The much maligned Irving conglomerate has been subject to a campaign by some anonymous person or persons who are putting stickers around town with alterations to the old design of the Irving Oil logo. I'm not sold on the message the stickers, which read Greed, Power and possibly other things, I think they are a part of an interesting urban landscape. If Irving Oil was into guerrilla marketing they might want to put out alterations of their current logo in sticker form reading such things as Employment and Opportunity.

King Street

This is a really cool grey scale painting that was at the rear of a building on King Street when I took this shot a few years back. I'll have to check if its still there.

Mispec Bridge

This graffiti has always caught my eye. I took this a few years ago. The painting is under the Mispec bridge in the east of Saint John.
